Môsô (Meng Zun 孟宗) is one of the 24 Paragons of filial piety of the Chinese Confucian tradition. Once, when his mother fell ill in the midst of winter, Môsô set out in the snow-bound foret in search of fresh bamboo shoots in order to prepare a soup for her. He is shown here standing in a straw raincoat and wearing a snow-covered hat. In his right hand he carries two bamboo-shoots while blowing on his left hand to warm it.
